Project Summary

Location: Chongqing, China

Project Area: 170,000 m²

Ping’s role: Principle designer

The project, in a prime site in Chongqing at the heart of the Financial District, was completed and opened on 30 June 2015. The scheme comprises of two 200m high towers containing office accommodation and a six storey podium containing a shopping mall and Imax theatre.

The project design is inspired by the combination of the waterfall and special landscape characteristics of Chongqing – “two rivers three shores”. The façade treatment reflects two waterfalls where the water starts its journey from the mountain top of the twin towers, cascades down the elevation and gently flows over the grey rock of the podium base to meet the ground. The illusion of water flowing is created by a variety of differing fritting patterns on the glazing and careful selection of glass colours with variable transparencies.

Project Summary

Location: Wuxi, China

Project Area: 90,000 m²

Ping’s role: Principle designer

The project was completed in 2012 and is situated in the new technology park in Wuxi. The scheme consists of three 150m towers in which 2 of them are SOHOs and the other one a boutique hotel. A 3-level podium sits under the towers and create a shopping street with interesting space. The retail can be accessed both by internal circulation and bridges link between podiums on both sides.

The idea behind the project is inspired by wrapping ribbon that flows with energy and dynamic. The idea extends from podium to the tower façade. It creates enclosed or semi open space in the podium while providing balconies on the tower. On the “ribbon” perforated panels with patterns and fritted glass are used as the materials to create a special and unifying façade.

Project Summary

Location: Chongqing, China

Project Area: 179,000 m²

Ping’s role: Principle designer

The project was completed in 2012 and was one of Vanke’s flagship developments that helped change the face of Chongqing. The scheme comprises of two 200m towers and one 100m tower containing a mix of office accommodation and serviced apartments. A podium containing multi level retail outlets accessed at street level and from within the inner landscaped plaza unites the three towers.

The façade treatment was inspired from high-end fashion where very regular but multi-layering clothing is reflected in the layers that compress to form the cloak around the building. To associate the elevational treatment with the calm of autumn in Chongqing a further layer of decorative metal panels with a punched through pattern of leaves has been added to both the podium and tower cladding systems.

The award winning Starlight Place shopping mall, home to nearly 250 renowned and international brands including the first GAP store in southwest China, opened its doors to the public in 2012 and is now considered to be one of Chongqing’s prime shopping destinations. The scheme comprises of two 150m high towers sitting on a 8 storey podium. The two towers contain serviced apartments and the podium roof.

The design of Starlight Place is one of contrasts from the strong angular form, driving lines and vibrant colour of the exterior to the soft free-flowing curves and calming colours of the interior. The dynamic exterior takes its inspiration from the mountains of Chongqing that is not only represented in the cladding and glazing but is reflected in the paving patterns, signage and artwork. To balance the limited sunlight in Chongqing Starlight Place incorporated a massive glazed atrium to allow natural light to penetrate deep into the lower floor areas.
